"Map the Art" - Circles of Life Installation
For our Projection Mapping class this past fall semester, my friend Olive Stewart and I created the "Circles of Life" installation, inspired by the works of British artist Andy Goldsworthy. Known for his site-specific sculptures and land art made from natural materials like rocks, leaves, and branches, Goldsworthy's work is characterized by its transient and ephemeral nature, reflecting themes of growth, decay, and the cycles of nature.
Drawing from his approach, we used both 2D and 3D mapping to transform found objects from nature into dynamic works of art. We gathered leaves, rocks, and branches to create a realistic nature installation, aiming to connect the chaos of life with nature's calming flow.
Using an Optoma projector known for its sharp and vibrant image quality, and a MacBook with MadMapper, we projected various animations onto these natural elements. Our goal was to depict the flow of life through these projections, immersing ourselves in Goldsworthy's artistic process and doing justice to his vision. This project allowed us to explore the intersection of nature and technology, creating an engaging and reflective experience for our audience.
